This weekend is a touch different since I didn't have to go to my research lab for continuing my final year project since supervisor is away :) Unfortunately, it turns out to be another pretty much wasted day relaxing most of the day and going to Robinsons for getting some Deepavali shirts and stuff for relatives (I did try to get some gifts for the girls' birthdays but my choosing of gifts for the other gender leaves a lot to be desired :P) and dinner at Komalas after that.

This post marks the revival of my blogging expertise, though I really MUST attribute it to repeated efforts from my 'bro' to get me to revive it. Might make a fun 'diary' of sorts later too ...

Considering there's no way I can possibly catch up with 5 months worth of stuff, I'll just stick to recent happenings and facts ... Today marked the ending of my GEK1534 (Microbes that changed human history) presentation (Yay!) worth 30% for the module - just also managed to kinda wrap up HRM group report, though I'll need to do something else for my individual presentation again :P Final year project is pretty stressful too and with supervisor gone to S.Africa (I think!) for a conference, I can't progress much too - leaving me in pretty much a state of a stalemate ...

Hmmm I can't really think up of anything interesting to report as such unless you wanna know all about how Clostridium Botulinum and E. Coli and Salmonella affect our lives :P:P Oh yeah this I did wanna mention - The Transporter 2 looks pretty good - worth a watch. On a side note, if you have time (and are prepared to spend a few minutes almost each day haha), this online game makes a pretty good one. Oh yeah, and if you want a few laughs, this makes a very good one!

Yup - first post in 4 months ... I might qualify for the laziest blogger in the world without any issues at all :p

Yup last sem was quite stressful - esp a module renowned as 'The Boat' - the problem was that though everything works on paper, for some reason the final model kept having issues right upto the time of presentation and even during the presentation :p
Just a part of life I guess. The rest was alright I guess - lets see how things go.
Back to my workspot @ CIT and working here happily debugging those minor bugs in IVLE and load testing and all :)

So for some news now. This site is sure creating waves now - about some guy who's trying to raise donations by threatening to kill his bunny if he doesn't get enough donations :p I wouldn't wanna comment much on the IQ of the people who DO donate for this kinda stuff. And the amount is $50,000!!! No meagre sum! The hate-mail section on the website and his retorts to it are funny enough anyway.

Movies - Sahara isn't a bad movie. Worth watching for sure. On the other hand, Mumbai Express is quite a bunch of crap and just gives a few laughs here and there - a rather sleepy story if you ask me :p
The Interpreter looks good too -Plan to go to catch it soon ...

Well, before I wrap up - This website is sure good if you want to turbo-charge up your desktop/laptop. The application there sure does some good repair work and tweaking work on your computer!

Bowling for me??

Anyway, yesterday was my first formal bowl in my life (Don't ask me if I had a deprived childhood when young - cricket and soccer were the in thing then, and bowling was WAAAYY too expensive ... matter of fact it still is :P). Didn't do too badly as I expected to do I guess, considering my very first throw was a spare, and in the end got 2 strikes and 3 spares overall, and a high score of 102. Not that I expect to repeat it though, think the 3 slices of the Pizza Hut Pizza should have been the one to thank for the performance.
Week 1 of the new term draws to a close and with it my 'free' time ... Yes I will of course play Doom 3 on the weekends till the mid-term break at least, but that doesn't count ... or does it? Hmm ...
Life seems rather boring as usual, but then again I guess it is meant to be that period in life ... Seeing the various posts on PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) comics, seems that life here isn't as bad as it is for some Harvard students haha ...
Not much comp stuff to report, everything seems rather dull. HL2 looks cool of course ... but no more game till the end of the semester for me. Its this for me for now ... :P

Yah the first post in over 2 months ... Guess I'm just waaayy too lazy :p
At the outset, Happy New Year to all of you! 2004 did end with some sorrow, lets hope 2005 brings us all joy and happiness!

Some of you seem rather interested in knowing my grades (though the reason beats me) - Anyway for their sake, here it is =>

1. Comm. Networks -> A,
2. Microprocessoy Systems -> A-,
3. Engineering Professionalism -> A-,
4. Project (3001) -> B+,
5. Comp Vision and Img processing -> B+,
6. Engineering Electromagnetism -> B+ ...

Post-exam was rather blissful - ending up watching 3 movies (Shark Tale, The Incredible and After the Sunset) in the same week, estimate watched 5/6 (lost count) last month and (quite rightfully) got a bit of a dressing down last night on spending $300 last month alone :p

Now maybe a couple of interesting things ...
1. Wanted to put this one in for ages, but well - better late than never ... M$ and its tricks ... I am not gonna say anything else ...

2. Doom 3 is an amazingly real game ... But gets rather horrifying at times - must admit playing without cheats is unthinkable of ... However this forms a rather distressing msg! I got (ok it WAS A b'day gift :P) an ORIGINAL version of the game ... oh well ...

Thats it for now ... more when I find time and mood :p

Yup though I wouldn't say that I had no time to update it - it was more like too lazy to work on it and couldn't get interesting enough reports to put in. First things first ... The movie 'Bourne Supremacy' is ABSOLUTELY awesome ... surely worth a look. Then there are a couple of reports that I am not SUPPOSED to put onto my blog though I want to. Leaving me with an absolute dearth of messages over the past 24 odd days.

In these 4 weeks were 4 EE2011 assignment submissions, 1 EE2011 quiz (which was incidentally made non-examinable in due course much to the frustration of all of us), 2 mini-projects for EE2007 and a lot of tutorials. Details of that would run onto approximately 18-20 pages or so - so keeping in mind the readers current state of mind, I shall consciously save them that mental anguish.

Before signing off for the day (with the promise that I shall update the posts more regularly from now on), here are a few interesting articles I observed:

Yup I know I havent posted in more than a week ... haizz ... But well - then again nothing much to post. Unless you guys want a daily account of my life from the moment I curse the alarm clock to get up to the time I hear Shape of My Heart before I go to bed. (Yes, this is one of my many idiosyncracies - hearing Shape of My Heart (BSB) before I go to sleep!) All this I am sure you guys don't really wanna know (TO be honest, I know of such a person who captures her entire life onto her blog - I wonder where she gets all the time from!) Anyway getting off the point. Tough life ... as usual. Week 4 has just begun - and with it the deadlines for my swan and socket assignments for EE3204. And there's the EE2007 mini-projects coming up as well ... For which I work on abt 5/6 odd hrs today (debugging) and get nowhere almost - But yes, life does go on ... :p

Before I ciao, just wanna post this link for you guys to view the 'status' of our university and those in the rest of the world. Well, NUS does look rather good in the listing, but well - life there isn't as sweet as the ranking shows ...

Singapore Idol bloopers :)

This post is mainly inspired by the Singapore Idol re-run that I saw last night on TVMobile.

Singapore Idol ... One of the best local comedies produced in Singapore! Some people on it (episode 1) were seriously comical.

First of all, there was Mr.Judge - Ken himself. His peering over his spectacles to give his 'evaluations' seemed like a granny peering over her rimmed glasses! But Dick was really good and funny. Doughlas and the lady were also fine.

Now the contestants. There was the stripper-guy of course. There was Mr.Rocky, the pop-guy flying in here all the way from Shanghai (who incidentally gets kicked out despite his most adament assertions that he is 'amongst the top 10 in the world' and that 'we 'would not be' regret' if we let him go on. There was the girl who cried like a kindergarten school girl seperated from her mum for the first time in her life. Then there was the guy who fainted from the 'fear' of singing in front of them (Oh give me a break!). And there was the 'lemon-tree guy' (Read more about him here). Then the guy who said he was gonna sing "'Somewhere only we know' by Guy sebastian" and ended up singing Sonewhere out there ... Quite a few more funny characters ...

Oh one more girl who interested me in that series. A muslim girl who sang decently - but was then told by the judges to improve her personality. And her reply was something like : 'Ok ... I'll change a bit - but not a complete makeover. Because I like the way I look now'. Thats it. She sealed doom for herself. The judges refused to give her the 'yellow slip'. And she could just have said an 'ok'. Who asked you to speak so much??!! Another thing. If you have watched 'The Apprentice', you should have learnt that one of the main criterion to remain in a competition is to beg for your post ... and to try to influence the judges opinion. This girl was like - 'Oookkk' and walks off ... Well, I again think that if she has stuck on, she might just have convinced them that she would improve her attire etc and got the green light.

Ok that abt it for now. Singapore Idol sure promises to be a bag of jokes for many more weeks to come! AMI was talent in singing ... well ... the talent here is in many other aspects ;)

But then again, nothing much to report.

Except that the first week of school begins ... and with it, does its related trials and tribulations.
The number of assignments and projects this sem are amazing to state the least. 2 for EE2011, a major one for EE2007 apart from the mini, 3 for EE3204, the main one for engin prof, not too sure about EE3206 (but I suppose there might be one for that also) and of course EE3001 is a project by itself.

Friday there was 'supposed' to be a make-up lec for EE3206 (Comp. vision). And when do I realise it? Just at that lec. Lucky had my earlier lec at that time in the same LT and I hadn't gone out before the next lecturer comes in. Mainly one of my friends (CY) who saves me ... Imagine the silly conversation that takes place between me and her then:

Me: Oh you got another lecture now ah?
CY: Yup.
Me: Microelectronics?
CY: Nope. Computer Vision.
Me: Oh ok.
Me: HUH!!!???? I AM ALSO DOING COMPUTER VISION! (the realisation just dawned on me!). I thought the lecture was on Monday!!!
CY: Nope. Make-up today.
Me: How you know?
CY: Announcement on IVLE.
(Imagine how I would feel. ME - supposed to be working on IVLE for the past 2 odd months never see announcement ...)
Anyway ...
ME: Ok. Thanks.

Then call up another friend (MZ) who also had incidentally forgotten about it. Ironically, had to do a course (IVLE demonstration) on THAT VERY DAY at that time for my workspot. Well ... sneaked out of lecture and rushed there and thanks to the help of Idayu, Yasmin and Jinlie (my colleagues there) managed somehow to return to lecture and let them manage it (Yes boss did get a bit irritated about it, mainly because it definitely wouldn't haven been as 'professional' as I would have done it ... but well ... at least he let me go for lec ...) [Btw, if any of you are reading this (which I doubt) thanks a lot!]

A very long post already. Which has been typed over a span of half and hr (with in between sneaks to the kitchen to smuggle into my stomach a couple of 'pakodas' that my mum made). So better stop now.

Dihydrogen Monoxide

A freshman at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to the alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."

And for plenty of good reasons, since it can:

1. cause excessive sweating and vomiting

2. it is a major component in acid rain

3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state

4. accidental inhalation can kill you

5. it contributes to erosion

6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes

7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical dihydrogen monoxide. Forty-three said yes, six were undecided, and only one knew that the chemical was...water.

The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?" The conclusion is obvious.
Second one -
Something got from this blog ...

Those of us Computer Engineering (CPE) students in the Engineering faculty of NUS have really been hard done by this time. First of all, our selection of modules are a subset of those in Electrical Engineering (EE) - EE students have a much wider range of modules to choose from, while CPE have to compete with those from EE for places in modules in our concentrations. I’ve heard it said that an EE student can convert his degree into a CPE one, provided he or she takes sufficient modules related to CPE. I now understand why the split of Computer Engineering from the School of Computing (SoC) has been said to be for political reasons.

Now, in the recent allocation of Final Year Projects (FYP), some CPE students (yours truly included) were wrongly allocated projects deemed ‘Unsuitable for CPE’ “because of a glitch” in the system. I can accept that - at least to the extent of accepting that a system that has been in place for several years can still fail. No matter. Provided something suitable was done as recompense for the lost opportunity to fairly ballot for the our FYP choices. I was lucky - after appealing for my 2nd choice project, which was unallocated, and with a 2nd mini-ballot, I got it. Others were not so lucky, as I’ve found. One of my friends was allocated neither his first 8 nor his appeal choices. OK, so he appealed to one of the heads to allow him to continue his Research Internship Project as an FYP - even his supervisor’s all ready to accept him. But no they say, “even if there is a glitch, there are still many students didn’t get any of their 8 choices… and you are not exceptional”. What? This student has forfeited his chance at balloting for his 8 choices because of YOUR glitch. And you expect him to accept the outcome of somebody else’s fumbling?

And what’s worse is most of the projects indicated as ‘Suitable for CPE’ were taken by EE students. This despite the fact that we have only a limited number of FYPs to choose from. I was worried initially and emailed the person in charge, who reassured me that yes CPE students will be given a priority. I now realise that was a lie: they refused to tell our year representative when he asked the same question.

Anyway, on a more cheerful note, a new feature that one of my office colleagues is working on is SUPER interesting. A way to view all the headlines all around at one shot. Damn good I must admit ... Can't wait for it to be released. A bit 'cheem' I must agree but hope it comes into effect soon.

Ok back to work for now. Help my colleague with any detection of bugs ... Try to get it up asap.

Been a tiring day today ...

Very tiring in fact.
Starts at 7am odd when I wake up and rush to University ... Manning my booth for my 'workspot' CIT. Basically giving out student IVLE guides. Started off with explanations at first - but the crowd got to me soon - after abt an hr or so ... It was just hand out to everyone. But acheived approx a 97% success rate (97% of the undergrads picked up the book, willingly or unknowingly :P) But hardly 15% asked me WHAT it was ... freshies ... so guillible ... But the worst thing is that the number of 'chio' or semi-'chio' girls that I saw in total could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Engin life sucks ...

And at 2pm I return - this time to man the booth for my CCA - NUS Toastmasters Club. More fun - at least not a one-man show :P But its PAID - so hardly get any members to sign up. Think I did abt 12 or so contact lists and a couple of sign-ups so not bad all in all ...

And I return to my office at 5pm+ and get back to work. Until about now. Life isnt really great to me ...

Thats it. Out of office. Go home, hit my pc with WC3, maybe watch 'The Apprentice' - slack all in all. I deserve it ... :P

Never cease to amaze me ... Always look so innocent. And the questions that they ask - quite amusing I might add. Was helping a freshie get around NUS a bit yesterday, teach her abt IVLE, CORS, NUSNET e-mail etc. Very fulfilling. Helped opened the door to computer centre for different people thrice or so - people dunno how to use m-card or its not activated yet ... stuff like that ...

Very interesting period this. Even more so is next week and the week after when these guys wander around looking for their LTs and Tut rooms ... normally rather fun ...

Well, but this brings back the harsh fact that this is the 'last' week of holidays for us. Oh well, life has to go on ...

Life and I are in the arena - round 1. Yup, read the next couple of lines and decide for yourself why is it that I need to 'fight' with life?
Slept late last night - 1 am plus. And awakened by a freaking nightmare about one of my friends being involved in an accident ... hell ... Get ready to go to NUS and it HAS to rain exactly when I step out of my building! So what happens - I get half wet getting to the bus-stop. So I get working all morning and uptil now to finish it. Hopefully, can 'slack' a bit now ...

The Best 46 freeware utilities of all time . Now this IS good stuff.
More fun utilities here including FTP Wanderer, a real good FTP Manager.

Oh and MUST include this - 99 Performance Tips for Windows XP. An awesome way to improve system performance and retrieve lost disc space.

Another one about mobile phones and the damage that it can cause - its enough to make some people stop using it, but sorry - I'm just way too addicted.
Phone battery flames injure teen. And there is the one about phones being the cause of explosions at gas stations and also the ever worrying dangerous radiation from phones that are linked to cancer and sterility.
School teaches ethical hacking. Swell ... as if I wanted to learn to 'ethically' hack. Just teach me to hack. Dump the ethics. But the Certified Ethical Hacker badge looks fun.
Another super application - FreeRAM XP Pro. Great to free RAM up, esp for gamers like me :p

Just kidding ... But looks like they have got a bit of a problem in gettting someone to fit Christopher Reeves shoes (look here for article). Will be tough, but I think Tom Weiling would make a good choice - he's already popular in Smallville as superman anyway. Or they could try Keane Reaves. He's already been doing a lot of 'Superman' stuff, esp in Matrix Reloaded :P
